John Prins, Board Member: Since the age of 5, John Prins has taken piano lessons - sometimes willingly and sometimes not so willingly. After high school, he majored in Piano at Hartt College of Music but ended up with a bachelors degree in Political Science from UConn and a masters in Labor Relations from Rutgers University. Now in his seventh year on the Branford Board of Education, John is a strong advocate for the arts in our schools. He has experienced the power of learning and mastering an instrument from many perspectives including discipline, perseverance, teamwork, cultural awareness, and career opportunity. John knows that music is not only fun but that it can be good for your mental health, too. He feels strongly that the arts are as important as the core subjects to achieving academic excellence for students who need different ways to process learning, and that's what brings him to the Board of MusiKids. No child with even a little talent should go without an instrument or lessons. They are so much more likely to be successful in what they do if they develop the ability to participate in the joy of making music. John is Director of Human Resources at a children's mental health clinic. He also does Organizational Development consulting and is an adjunct professor of in the School of Business and the Organizational Leadership program at Quinnipiac University. He and his wife Ruth have two musically talented children and they have lived in Branford for almost 20 years.
